Product recalls in Canada: Health Canada, Transport Canada and CFIA

Canada takes a notably unified approach: a single bilingual portal aggregates recall notices from the main federal health and safety departments. Understanding which department owns a recall helps you find the authoritative source and any follow-up information.

The unified portal: recalls-rappels.canada.ca

The Recalls and Safety Alerts database at recalls-rappels.canada.ca brings together notices from Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Transport Canada in one searchable, bilingual (English/French) interface. Subscribing to email or RSS alerts from this portal is the most practical way to monitor Canadian recalls across product categories.

Consumer and health products: Health Canada

Health Canada oversees recalls of consumer products (under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act), cosmetics, natural health products and medical devices. For food-related health risk assessments Health Canada works alongside the CFIA, which manages the operational recall. Notices appear on the unified portal and on Health Canada’s own site at canada.ca.

Food: the CFIA

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency conducts food recalls, typically acting on a Health Canada health-risk assessment. The recall class system is similar in concept to the FDA model: Class I covers a high risk of serious health problems or death; Class II covers a moderate risk of short-term or non-life-threatening health problems; Class III covers low-risk situations, including products that breach the rules without posing a health risk. CFIA notices appear on the unified portal and at the unified recall portal.

Vehicles: Transport Canada

Transport Canada administers safety recalls for motor vehicles, tires, child car seats and related equipment under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Manufacturers must issue a notice of defect or non-compliance to affected owners; free repair of the defect is standard industry practice for safety recalls in Canada, and amendments to the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (in force since 2018) gave the Minister the power to order a recall when a manufacturer does not act voluntarily. Recall records are searchable at tc.canada.ca.

What this means in practice

Start at recalls-rappels.canada.ca for any Canadian product concern — one search covers food, consumer goods and vehicles. For vehicle defects specifically, Transport Canada’s own database allows lookup by make, model and year. The official notice always states the affected units and the remedy; follow it rather than any summary.
