El alternador puede sufrir fallas de fatiga térmica del diodo debido a cargas cíclicas inducidas por la EHPS (Dirección Asistida Electro Hidráulica). Cuando los diodos fallan, el alternador ya no suministrará energía eléctrica al vehículo y puede ocasionar que el vehículo se detenga sin advertencia. Los diodos con falla también pueden desarrollar un cortocircuito resistivo que puede ocasionar calentamiento, humo y/o incendio que se origina dentro del alternador.
