What the authority reported

Issue: On certain school buses, the castle nut securing the tie rod may not have been tightened properly and/or the cotter pin may be missing. As a result, the nut could loosen and separate. If this happens, there could be a loss of steering control.

Safety Risk: A loss of steering control could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your school bus to a DTNA authorized service facility to inspect and, if necessary, replace the tie rod.

What to do

Follow the instructions in the official notice — recall remedies (refund, repair, replacement, or disposal) are defined by the issuing authority and the responsible business, and they differ per recall. Do not rely on summaries, including this one.
